Nurses are advocates! Throughout our careers, from when we are students till after we retire, we advocate for our patients as individuals and our patients as society and our environment.
Provision 9 of the Code of Ethics for Nurses speaks to this advocacy as it states that the profession of nursing, collectively through its professional organizations use articulate nursing values, maintain the integrity of the profession, and integrate principles of social justice into nursing and health policy. In part, we, as members of professional nursing organizations have a responsibility to:
speak collectively in shaping heath care and to promulgate change for the improvement of health and health care at al levels
influence leaders legislators, governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, and international bodies in all related health affairs to address the social determinants of health
model the profession’s commitment to social justice and health
actively engage in the political process particularly in addressing legislative and regulatory concerns…to advance a nursing agenda for health
advocate tor policies, programs and practices that maintain, sustain and repair the natural world.
